“King’s Speech” could cross $200M come Oscar night

By Sean O’Connell

Hollywoodnews.com: Oscar analysts know that a film’s performance at the box office counts when they are weighing a film’s chances at taking home the Best Picture prize. So a report out of Hollywood this morning might be the cherry on top of a “King’s Speech” sundae, which the Academy is expected to devour on Feb. 27.

If estimates hold, Tom Hooper’s crowd-pleasing historical drama should pass the $200 million mark at the global box office by the time the Oscars air … a staggering figure for a lower-budget, independent picture short on special effects but long on outstanding performances.

“Many questioned how the film would play in non-English speaking markets, especially after a relatively slow start in Spain. But after ‘Speech’ picked up 12 Oscar nominations and won a series of major guild awards, business picked up,” THR writes.

The film currently has a worldwide gross of $173.2M, with $86.4M of that coming from the U.S.

To no one’s surprise, the picture has dominated in the UK, where THR says it “will cross the $50 million mark this weekend.”
